Quick answers

Does Medicare pay for memory care?

Generally no. Medicare covers doctor visits, hospital stays, short rehab stays and hospice, but not long-term help with daily living or room and board in memory care. Most families pay with savings, long-term care insurance, Medicaid or VA benefits. See what memory care costs.

Can Medicaid help pay for dementia care in Florida?

Yes, for people who qualify. Florida's Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care program can help pay for care at home, adult day care and assisted living. There are income and asset limits and often a waitlist, so it pays to apply early. Call the Florida Elder Helpline at 1-800-963-5337 to start. Read our step-by-step guide.

My parent is a veteran. Can the VA help?

Possibly. Wartime veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily activities may qualify for Aid and Attendance, a monthly payment added to a VA pension that can go toward home care or memory care. Free help applying is available from accredited Veterans Service Officers.

Is it time for memory care?

Common signs: wandering or getting lost, leaving the stove on, missed medications, falls, or a family caregiver who is exhausted. If your parent is not safe alone, it is time to compare 24-hour home care and memory care. Take our 1-minute quiz to see which fits.
